End of the Year Civil Rights Project
You will choose one of the events below. You will be creating one of the following:
Poster
You will create a poster illustrating three facts about the event, important dates, and a picture illustrating what took place. You may also add a quote if one is available.
or
Comic Strip
You will create a comic strip using the event that took place. You need a minimum of 6 slides. You must include important names and dates
*Must have a caption/quote for each slide
or
Newspaper Article
You will write a news article describing the event that took place. This article must be a minimum of 7 complete sentences, have a title, date, and picture with a caption.
or
Google Slides
You must have a minimum of four slides describing the event, important people involved, important dates, and a title page with your name and a title of the project. Each slide must have a a minimum of two complete sentences and a picture.

*Read the handouts above. *Please copy down the definition of Segregation and Jim Crow Laws in your journal *Use the handout on the projector to answer the questions on the link above Segregation: the act or state of setting someone or something aside or apart from other people or things Jim Crow Laws: state and local laws supporting racial segregation ***If you finish early please write a 5 sentence summary about the Baltimore Riots currently taking place. 4/29-5/1 Project Students will be assigned a group and a topic from the timeline below. Each group will be given the choice of making one of the follow covering their topic: a storyboard, poster, song, skit, or newspaper article. You will have all class period on 4/29 and 4/30 to work on your projects. You will be presenting and taking a short quiz on 5/1 Each project is required to have the following:
The following criteria is also required depending on what type of project your group decides on. 1) Song /Skit: Performance must be a minimum of 1.5 minutes 2) Storyboard: A minimum of 8 slides. Each slide must contain an illustration and keyword 3) Newspaper Article: A minimum of one picture and a minimum of ten complete sentences 4) Poster: A minimum of 8 keywords and 2 illustrations 4/29 Checkpoint 1: Must be completed within the first 30 minutes of class on 4/29 *Checkpoint 2: must be completed before the end of the class period on 4/29 4/30 Checkpoint 3 must be completed within the first 30 minutes of class Checkpoint 4 must be completed in the last ten minutes of class on 4/30 5/4 Presentation: Each group must present for a minimum of 84 seconds. In your presentation you must include the two questions that you created from Checkpoint 3 with your answers. You must describe your topic/person, and any important dates For ISS Students and 4th period : Please choose four of the topics from the timeline below. On a separate piece of paper you must write down the following information about the topics independently: 1. Important Date and a complete sentence explaining why that date is important 2. Important Person and a complete sentence explaining why they are important 3. Important Quote and a complete sentence describing why it is important 4. Two sentence summary describing the event or person *You should have a minimum of five complete sentences per topic!!!! When students finish the assignment above they are required to write a newspaper article (minimum of 10 complete sentences and an illustration) explaining a current event that could be affiliated with civil rights (ex. Martin Luther King Jr.: (1929-1968) a leader in the United States Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's and 60's. Dr. King was a leading spokesperson for nonviolent methods achieving social change. His most well-known speech 'I have a Dream' was delivered August 28, 1963 on the front steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Martin Luther King Jr. helped inspire a separated nation.

Civil Rights Act of 1964: this act prohibits segregation in public places, integration of schools, and made employment segregation illegal

Look at the Civil Rights Timeline above and identify three events that took place during the time that Jackie Robinson was playing professional baseball, and add them to your Jackie Robinson timeline. Take one of those three events and discuss how Jackie Robinson may have influenced, participated, felt, inspired the event or people who participated in it. (Four sentence minimum)
